The Art of Listening

Over a law enforcement officer’s career, how many statements from crime victims will they have heard; how many disputes will they have resolved; or just how many accounts from suspects will they have listened to?  Being a good listener is a valuable skill for any law enforcement officer and should be pursued with tenacity.  Here’s what the Bible says:

  • Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger… James 1:19 (ESV)
  • What a shame—yes, how stupid!—to decide before knowing the facts! Proverbs 18:13 (TLB)
  • If ever you were willing to listen, listen now!  Matthew 11:15 (TLB)
  • Cease listening to instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge. Proverbs 19:27 (NKJV)
  • And the LORD came and called as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel replied, “Speak, your servant is listening.” 1 Samuel 3:10 (NLT)
  • My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to my words. Proverbs 4:20 (NLT)

  • To one who listens, valid criticism is like a gold earring or other gold jewelry. Proverbs 25:12 (NLT)
