This is a standard oath repeated by law enforcement officers across America:
I do solemnly swear or affirm that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of __________ against all enemies foreign and domestic that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of ________ that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties upon which I am about to enter, so help me God.
Check out the biblical connection below:
Swear: If a man makes a vow to the Lord, or swears an oath to bind himself by some agreement, he shall not break his word; he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth. (Numbers 30:2 NKJV); “Now when people take an oath, they call on someone greater than themselves to hold them to it. And without any question that oath is binding.” (Hebrews 6:16 NLT) Also see Deuteronomy 10:20, Jeremiah 5:2, James 5:12, Proverbs 6:2, Zechariah 9:16-17, 2Corinthians 1:23
Support and defend: “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed.” (Proverbs 31:8 NLT); “For he is God's minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God's minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.” (Romans 13:4 NKJV) Also see Zech 8:15-17, Romans 12:19, Psalm 144:1, 1Peter 5:8
True Faith: “Fear the LORD your God, serve him only and take your oaths in his name.” (Deuteronomy 6:13 NIV) “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men...” (Colossians 3:23 NKJV); “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Colossians 3:17) “...seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness...” (Matthew 6:33 NKJV) Also see 1Peter 2:13-17, Luke 20:25, Deuteronomy 10:20, Deuteronomy 28:1-68, 1Peter 3:15a, Ecclesiastes 5:2
Allegiance: “I say, ‘Keep the king's commandment for the sake of your oath to God. Do not be hasty to go from his presence. Do not take your stand for an evil thing…" (Ecclesiastes 8:2-3a) “Fear the LORD your God and serve him. Hold fast to him and take your oaths in his name. (Deuteronomy 10:20 NIV) Also see Titus 3:1, Romans 13:1-3, Proverbs 24:21, Ecclesiastes 9:2, Matthew 5:33-37, Matthew 6:24
Faithfully discharge the duties: “Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1Corinthians 10:31 NKJV); “Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all...” (Romans 12:14-21 ESV) Also see Zechariah 8:15-17, Matthew 5:9, Romans 13:1-7
