Hatred & Bitterness

by
Randy Emon

LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS will encounter many individuals (including co-workers and religious people) who have, for years, harbored hatred and bitterness in their hearts against others for various reasons. Check out what the Bible says about those issues:

  • But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! (Matthew 5:22 NKJV)
  • He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now. (1John 2:9 NKJV)
  • Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many. (Hebrews 12:15 NLT)
  • If someone says, "I love God," but hates a Christian brother or sister, that person is a liar; for if we don't love people we can see, how can we love God, whom we cannot see? (1John 4:20 NLT)
  • Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you. (Ephesians 4:31-32 NLT)
  • ‘You shall not hate your brother in your heart. You shall surely rebuke your neighbor, and not bear sin because of him.  You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord. Leviticus 19:17-18(NKJV)
  • Hatred stirs up strife, But love covers all sins. Proverbs 10:12(NKJV)
  • A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger. Proverbs 15:1(NKJV)
  • Do not say, “I’ll pay you back for this wrong!” Wait for the LORD, and he will deliver you. Proverbs 20:22(NIV)
  • “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy’ and pray for those who persecute you... Matthew 5:43-44(NIV)
  • For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.  Matthew 6:14-15(NIV)
  • The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:31(NIV)
  • The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery;
idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions  and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,  gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:19-23(NIV)
  • Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.  And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Colossians 3:12-14(NIV)
  • My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,  for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.  Therefore, get rid ofall moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. James 1:19-21(NIV)
