Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
5 Commit your way to the LORD, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass.
Psalm 37:4-5
David starts this Psalm with the word “Delight.” “Delight” can be defined as, “a high degree of gratification or pleasure; extreme satisfaction..” Is that how we view God? Is that how we view His Word? Is that how we view our relationship with Him? The sad truth is many do not see God, His Word and a relationship with Him as a delight. They see a relationship with and following God as being burdensome. Their perspective is flawed and self-centered. They, we, have missed the incredible truth that we have the hope of heaven because God redeemed us through Christ and the Cross.
Let’s refocus. How would you feel if someone went out of their way to bless you for no reason? Most of us would feel great joy from this blessing. We would be “delighted!” God, through Christ, has saved us from Hell and offers us an eternity with Him. Here, through David, God says, “Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.” As we come to God and cultivate a relationship with Him, old things pass away. Our wants and desires will be to please the One who loves us, saved us, provides for us and blesses us.
What do you desire? Is it fame, fortune, a position or a title? These “desires” are temporary and usually driven by self. Our greatest desire should be more of Christ. God made it possible for us to come to Him at any time. He wants to bless us and use us to change lives. As we surrender more of ourselves to Him the desire for more of Him will grow and He will be the “greatest desire of our heart..” Ask God to search and reveal the desires of your heart. If your desires are for the things of the world, pray for a changed heart that desires Christ above all. There’s no greater blessing than a closer and deeper relationship with Christ and God will bless those who diligently seek Him.
