41 Goliath walked out toward David with his shield bearer ahead of him, 42 sneering in contempt at this ruddy-faced boy. 43 “Am I a dog,” he roared at David, “that you come at me with a stick?” And he cursed David by the names of his gods. 44 “Come over here, and I’ll give your flesh to the birds and wild animals!” Goliath yelled. 45 David replied to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 Today the LORD will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head. And then I will give the dead bodies of your men to the birds and wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel! 47 And everyone assembled here will know that the LORD rescues His people, but not with sword and spear. This is the LORD’s battle, and He will give you to us!” 1Samuel 17:41-47

The Bible account of the battle between David and Goliath is a story known to believer and unbeliever alike. It’s the greatest “underdog” story ever recorded. The Philistine giant, Goliath, a “Man of War” from his youth, is challenged by David, a ruddy shepherd boy, to a fight to the death for defying the God of the Armies of Israel. Goliath was over nine feet tall. His armor and spear weighed more than David. To the human eye, especially the “Armies of Israel,” Goliath looked like a “fortress of flesh” compared to ruddy little shepherd boy, David. Yet to David, Goliath was a nothing but an “uncircumcised Philistine cancer” that needed to die and David would be Gods messenger of deliverance with a sling and a stone. This story seems too fantastic to be true. How could a “ruddy shepherd boy” defeat a “Giant, a Man of War from his youth,” in a physical battle? David gives us the answer in verse 45: “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied..” David knew this battle belonged to God. David believed and trusted that the “LORD of the Armies of Heaven” would bring the victory. David knew this was not going to be a battle of physical stature and power. David knew this was a spiritual battle and all he needed to do was believe, trust and go, and God would give him victory..! What’s your “Giant” today? Is it physical, spiritual, financial or emotional? Are you like Saul’s army who took one look at Goliath, turned and ran in fear? 2Timothy 1:7 says: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind..” Life will present trials and tribulations that look like “Giants” that will defeat and destroy us. This is true if we try to wage war in our flesh. When we pray, study, and trust God by putting on and keeping on the “Full Armor of God,” no enemy, flesh or spirit, has a chance. Trust that the “God of the Armies of Heaven” is with you and the victory is already yours..
