“Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant.
44 “And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all.
45 “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
Mark 10:43-45
Great leaders should always be training and raising up those to replace them as great leaders. Great leaders must never forget that great leaders must remain great servants and always lead with the heart of a sacrificial servant and set that example. Submission, humility and sacrifice are required for anyone to serve, lead or both. If you’re a leader but can’t submit to someone in authority over you, you are not fit to lead or serve.
I was on staff as the Security Supervisor at a very large church. This church had thousands of people attending services and we had services and ministries almost every night of the week. I had close to 100 people on the Security Team. The Team was made of men and women from a variety of backgrounds. I had people on the Team with business backgrounds as well as active and retired Military, Fire, EMS, Medical and Law Enforcement personnel. I had a retired Corrections Warden, an active Fire Department Battalion Chief, and a Police Lieutenant who was also a Lieutenant Colonel in the Marine Corps. I could rely on these Men to step in at anytime to replace me. They were also humble enough to serve with passion if I asked them to pick up trash in the parking lot. That’s the heart of a true Servant-Leader!
Most people confuse the title of “Leader” with “Boss.” A “Boss” usually wants power and prestige. They want to be noticed, revered and some even want to be worshipped. A “Leader” sets the example of how things should be done and works “with” and “alongside” the people he or she leads. Remember what Jesus said: “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many..” Great leaders must be and stay great servants. If you’re a leader in some capacity and are put in a position to serve under someone else, serve. Don’t be arrogant and constantly challenge the person you serve under. Set the example of a sacrificial servant and support your leader with prayer. There has never been a greater example of a Servant-Leader than Jesus. Follow His example.
