4 “LORD, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered—how fleeting my life is.
5 You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand. My entire lifetime is just a moment to You; at best, each of us is but a breath.”
Psalm 39:4-5(NLT)
Billy Graham once said, “The greatest surprise in life to me is the brevity of life..” We’re all given a certain amount of time to live. At the beginning of creation, God allowed some men to live over 900 hundred years. Today, very few lived past the age of 100 years old. Not everyone lives to a “ripe old age.” Some, unfortunately, die shortly after birth. Some die in their youth from a tragic event or an unexpected and unwanted illness. In James 4:14, James reminds us, “For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away..”
I’m writing this because of a recent event I read about. I love NASCAR racing. One of the best drivers in NASCAR suddenly became ill and died. He was only 41 years old. A few days before his death he won a race. No one wakes up thinking they will lose their 41 year old, husband or father and surely no one 41 years old expects to pass away, yet it happened to this young driver and his family. Life is brief. So how are we living? Are we grateful and thankful? Are we making time for family and friends? Are we seeking to bless, honor, cherish and love others reminding ourselves that we are not promised tomorrow?
Every day is a gift. Truth be told, every moment is a gift and we should be grateful for each one of them. Don’t let the cares and burdens of life rob you of these precious moments. Each moment that you spend worrying about temporary or irrelevant things is a moment that’s gone forever. Tell and show people you love them and that they’re valuable to you. Give more of yourself to Christ and serving others. Don’t let the devil get you busy being busy. Make time to enjoy what God has blessed you with and seek to bless others with His blessings. There will always be “something to do,” but don’t let those “to do’s” rob you or distract from what’s important; the people you love and Christ. Life is brief. Don’t sweat the nonessentials. Treasure the moments.
