Discipline

At some point in a law enforcement officer’s career, everyone will be subjected to administrative discipline ranging from an oral rebuke to suspension or termination.  But did you know discipline is really an important, effective and necessary corrective tool if properly understood and applied?  Check out how it is used in the bible:

  • A servant will not be corrected by mere words; For though he understands, he will not respond. Proverbs 29:19(NKJV)
  • Correct your son, and he will give you rest; Yes, he will give delight to your soul. Proverbs 29:17(NKJV)
  • To discipline a child produces wisdom, but a mother is disgraced by an undisciplined child. Proverbs 29:15(NLT)
  • No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way. Hebrews 12:11(NLT)
  • Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them. Proverbs 13:24(NLT)
  • Obey your spiritual leaders, and do what they say. Their work is to watch over your souls, and they are accountable to God. Give them reason to do this with joy and not with sorrow. That would certainly not be for your benefit. Hebrews 13:17(NLT)
  • Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid. Proverbs 12:1(NIV)
  • A wise son heeds his father’s instruction, but a mocker does not listen to rebuke. Proverbs 13:1(NIV)
  • Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord. Ephesians 6:4(NLT)
  • My child, don’t reject the LORD’s discipline, and don’t be upset when he corrects you. For the LORD corrects those he loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights. Proverbs 3:11-12(NLT)
  • Blessed is the man you discipline, O LORD, the man you teach from your law; you grant him relief from days of trouble, till a pit is dug for the wicked. Psalms 94:12-13(NIV)
  • Masters, provide your slaves with what is right and fair, because you know that you also have a Master in heaven. Colossians 4:1(NIV)
  • Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ. Try to please them all the time, not just when they are watching you. As slaves of Christ, do the will of God with all your heart. Work with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will reward each one of us for the good we do, whether we are slaves or free. Ephesians 6:5-8(NLT)
  • Masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Don’t threaten them; remember, you both have the same Master in heaven, and he has no favorites. Ephesians 6:9(NLT)
